Independence

Happy Independence Day to all Malaysians! It have been sometime since the last time I rant about something here. Personally, I am never any good in keeping up to date with this log or journal kinda thing. Few weeks past living a hectic lifestyle nowadays. Mostly nomadic in nature and hard to keep up with it either financially, physically nor spiritually. Well enough about that; up until now, I have been poring into numerous academic journals, research article, and books in order to find a research topic that suits me. I don't wanna find a cloth that I will have to try to fit into it for I am looking something that reflect me if I were to put it figuratively. It sure was a hell of work. After a careful consideration I am back to square one: Digital Language Lab. Why should I chose it? Hmm... It is my topic to begin with so I can choose it to my own liking.Ha ha ha. Seriously, I am directly involved in it when I work in polytechnic. I got my scholarship because the DLL proposal that I did then; of course I will have to do it. The government are spending from minimum of RM200k to RM1million per lab; should they not be interested if it have any impact on students learning and their achievement? To think that each polytechnic have at least three operating Digital Language Lab, that is quite a sum of money spent... well that is it for today. Other than that, I have just finished a book title Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mills (1863) and find a caption I like best:

"It is better to be human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied;
better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied."

Why? Socrates, although dissatisfied is capable of enjoying high quality pleasures, is in happier state compares to a fool who is satisfied but incapable of such pleasure.'In regione caecorum rex est luscus'.Till next time.

Research notes

I have uploaded some of the materials I have gathered during my Research Methodology & Quantitative Analysis Course that I have attended in EDC UUM a few months back. Contributed by Dr Yuserrie (UMP), Dr Amirul Faiz (USM) and Dr Siti Rohaida (USM). I hope these will help to those who are interested in conducting research. Perhaps if i have more time in my hands I'll upload some more lecture notes. Other than that I'll be very interested in hearing any comments or feedback from those who read it.

EDU 704: WHO AM I?

Just finished reading Chapter 1 of "Who Am I? The 16 Basic Desires That Motivate Our Actions and Define Our Personalities." Written by Stephen Reiss. I must say it is quite interesting material. The ideas are thrown in the rationale kind of way that is different from the theory of human motivation, by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) where from cradle to tomb what people want is sex, sex, and more sex (hmm..). Whereas, Stephen theory is an expansion of the earlier theory of The Principles of Psychologyby William James (1842-1938) and William Mcdougall (1871-1938). Although the idea was opposed until its influence might have been lost by the behaviorists (desires are learnt, not inherited) and psychoanalysts (who needs anything when you have sexual motivation for about everything you do in life?) it was later restated by Henry A. Murray(1893-1988) where he developed a popular technique for assessing a persons motive. Much later, Dr Stephen (then) conducted a research and come up with 16 basic desires. The order of presentation is without significance:

• Power is the desire to influence others.
• Independence is the desire for self reliance.
• Curiosity is the desire for knowledge.
• Acceptance is the desire for inclusion.
• Order is the desire for organization.
• Saving is the desire to collect things.
• Honor is the desire to be loyal to one's parentsand heritage.
• Idealism is the desire for social justice.
• Social Contact is the desire for companionship.
• Family is the desire to raise one's own children.
• Status is the desire for social standing.
• Vengeance is the desire to get even.
• Romance is the desire for sex and beauty.
• Eating is the desire to consume food.
• Physical Activity is the desire to exercise muscles.
• Tranquility is the desire for emotional calm.

Stephen claims that the 16 basic desires are common not only to the human species but also to our nearest relatives in the animal world. Huh? that one part I have to disagree for I'm no Darwinist. Also I find it lack one desire that set us human differently to any other creature on this planet. Faith or Zeal the desire for God, Religion and Beliefs. Then "what about the Atheist and faithless?" some may ask. In my opinion they do have their belief that God does not exist so they have faith in their point and defend the idea zealously. For it have been a question at the back of almost everyone about how the world become to be what it is. Who created it. How it was created and why was it created... hmm enough thinking for now.
